Mariah's page

Although her name always appeared as Maria, her granddaughter Bernice Maria Dennick got her middle name from Maria Van Patten Wormuth how after her family was grown married twice more, first her late sister's husband, ED Clapp, and then a distant cousin, William Wells.
For unknown reasons when Gen. John B. VanPatten wrote the infamous letter that was edited at some point and appeared in a book by Margaret Polocak renaming Maria "Nancy Maria".  In fact when he closed the letter he only used Maria in the string of siblings.  After locating 103 years of primary documentation from cradle to grave, it is doubtful on Nancy ever being used unless she was introduced as "Nancy's Maria" or referred to in that way.    On careful reading of the Van Patten & Allen version (letterhead), a copy that contains "Irs" as well as "Ira", before it was "fixed" to "Iris" along its journey, the paragraph is more concerned with Sarah Webb's grandmother Nancy Van Patten who married Sanford Wells and were the parents of Eliabeth Wells who married Frederick Van Patten, who were the parents of Sarah Van Patten Webb.  In that version is where the double relationship is claimed for the double Van Patten connection, and he was not positve of his memory.

"The Cato Citizen", Thursday, April 17, 1930; pg. 4; col. 3:

Mrs. Maria Wells
Aged 103 Years
Died on Tuesday

Mrs. Maria Wells, who observed her 103rd birthday last week died on Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jared Denick in the town of Ira, near Lysander.
Funeral arrangements have not been made as we go to press.
Born April 12, 1827 at Guilderland, Albany County, Mrs. Wells was a daughter of Nicholas Van Patten.  She moved with her parents to the town of Ira, and has made her home there for nearly a century.  She has been thrice married.  Her husbands, all deceased, were Henry Wormuth, Emerson D. Clapp and William Wells.  Besides her daughter, Mrs. Denick, who is 75, Mrs. Wells has a living son *** Loren Wormuth, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Wells has lived under all presidents of the United States, with the exception of Washington, John Adams and Jefferson.
It was not until she was three years old that the first railroad train was run.  George IV was King of England, Charles X was on the throne of France.  She was 17 years old when Morse sent the first telegram from Washington to Baltimore,  "What hat God wroght, " and she was 19 when the Mexican war began.
Mrs. Wells was wont to tell of the hardships of pioneer days when the family, five girls and five boys, would huddle about the fireplace on cold winter nights.  Sometimes they would fill a kettle with hot coals because there would be not be room about the fireplace.

The house ****built by her father is now owned by Wellington Wormuth, as son of her husband's half brother, Levi Wormuth.

***Evidence of a son John, in a statement to Loren Wormuth of, "I don't think I ever knew your brother John" by Gen. John B. Van Patten.  As Maria was very much living, not certain on the relavence of the remark.  The General appeared to be foggy on his recollection of Maria, and certainly on Loren.    A new 1850 Census reading  New York State, Onondaga County, Town of Lyander Roll:  M432_570 Lysander Page:  486

**** Was still standing last visit.   Their is a belief that he was a carpenter and house builder and was not a blacksmith.  The General was refering to another Nicholas when he wrote that that he "was a blacksmith and farmer who lived and died in Cato, NY."

The following contained what was part of a cemetery study.    I kept running into a family file created form Sarah Webb's DAR papers (probably in Auburn, NY)  that  kept giving that Nicholas P. had lived until 1851, and Sarah had lived to 1872.    However no trace could be found of them after they sold their property about 1848.     Each of the nearby to Ira was searched in case it had been overlooked, an the actual site checked for if the lot was "full".
John Van Patten's monument was on a side where writing might or not be located on, but is traditionally a face parents might be on, or for that matter children.  John's inscription was finger read as the ground was soft, (and full of poison ivy).  The stone was in excellent condition.  A son Charles was also missing.
